Offered is a beautiful American service flag.  In the United States, a service flag is an official banner that a family of a service member displays.  Service flags were first displayed during World War I, and have been displayed in every US war since.  Typically, service flags include a red border surrounding a rectangular white field, and the rectangular white field surrounds a blue star.  In contrast, this service flag includes an interesting white star shaped field that surrounds the blue star, both of which are entirely embroidered.  The blue star is representative of a family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

This particular example dates to the World War I era (1914-1918), and includes a patriotic shield and an embroidered overprint.  The overprint is the following: IN | SERVICE | OVER THERE.  We have offered many service flags over the past few years, and this is among our favorites.

Conservation Process: This flag was hand sewn to cotton fabric, and both were hand sewn to a mounting board.  To prevent the black dye in the cotton fabric from seeping into the flag, it was first washed in a standard wash and then in a dye setting wash.  The flag is positioned behind Optium Museum Acrylic.

Frame: The antique frame includes an outer walnut layer and an inner gilded layer.  It dates to between 1860 and 1890.

Condition: This service flag exhibits some losses along its fringe, particularly near the bottom and top left corners.  It also exhibits some minor moth damage.  In all other respects, it presents wonderfully.
