Offered is a US service flag that dates to the World War II era (1939-1945).  In the US, a service flag is an official banner that the family of a service member displays.  Service flags were first displayed during World War I, and have been displayed in every US war since.

This service flag includes a red border surrounding a rectangular white field, and the rectangular white field surrounds a blue star.  The white field is handsewn to the red border, and the blue star is handsewn to the white field.  The blue star is representative of a family member serving in the Armed Forces of the United States.

Conservation Process: This flag was hand sewn to cotton fabric, and both were hand sewn to a mounting board.  To prevent the black dye in the cotton fabric from seeping into the flag, it was first washed in a standard wash and then in a dye setting wash.  The flag is positioned behind Conservation Clear Acrylic (standard) or behind Optium Museum Acrylic (per request).

Frame:
The antique frame includes an outer walnut layer and an inner gold layer.  It dates to around 1890.

Condition:
This service flag exhibits some losses along its fringe, particularly near the bottom and top left corners.  It also exhibits some minor moth damage.  In all other respects, it presents wonderfully.
